ZURICH, Switzerland, Sep 23, 2026 – ABB has launched Infinitus, including 800 VDC architectures, in AI data centers. It covers power supply, conversion, distribution, protection and cooling for DC-native and hybrid AC/DC facilities.

ABB says 800 VDC distribution eliminates redundant conversion stages and reduces heat losses compared with conventional AC systems. The equipment requires less space, leaving more room for computing racks.

A BCG/ABB report calculated energy efficiency gains exceeding 5% from DC distribution. For a 500 MW data center, ABB estimates a 5% gain could make 25 MW available for IT equipment. The company projects more than $300M in potential additional annual revenue from that capacity.

Giampiero Frisio, president of ABB’s Electrification business area said: “ABB has pioneered DC technology for more than 25 years across several segments. We are working closely with chipmakers, hyperscale customers, supply partners and industry bodies to set the standards and the pace for the roll-out of high-efficiency DC architectures. Infinitus is the first portfolio providing the building blocks for any data center architecture – either DC native or hybrid AC/ DC – to power next-generation AI chips efficiently. This technology will bring similar energy efficiency gains to other energy-intensive industries such as large-scale manufacturing, renewables and marine operations.”

The Infinitus portfolio includes:

  • Medium Voltage Powertrains: Supply power from the grid or on-site generation.
  • DC Sources and Power Quality: Convert AC to DC outside the space housing IT equipment.
  • DC Power Distribution: Distribute power to support higher power density within a smaller footprint.
  • DC Power Protection: Protect operators, AI servers and other hardware from DC overcurrents.
  • Cooling Optimization: Use DC-connected variable-speed drives and motors to reduce energy consumption across infrastructure and IT areas.

ABB works with customers to configure deployments around power requirements, facility layouts and energy sources. The portfolio supports DC architectures and installations combining AC/DC systems.

Production and Deployment Schedule

ABB expects main components to enter production within the next 12 months. The first DC-native facilities using the complete Infinitus portfolio are expected to operate within two to three years.

The launch extends ABB’s collaboration with NVIDIA on 800 VDC power architectures for AI facilities. The companies announced that collaboration in October 2025.
