ZURICH, Switzerland, Sep 10, 2026 – ABB and Rolls-Royce SMR have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) covering Rolls-Royce’s fleet of small modular reactors (SMR), each of which would generate 470 MW of low-carbon electricity. As per Rolls-Royce, that output is enough to power one million UK homes for 60 years.
ABB will explore how its automation, electrification, instrumentation, and communication solutions, spanning its three business areas, can support the SMR program. The Rolls-Royce SMR is a pressurized water reactor (PWR) in a symmetric, three-loop, close-coupled layout, using PWR technology. The plant includes multiple layers of safety, redundancy, and backup systems.
Rolls-Royce SMR has begun site-specific design and delivery work for the UK’s first SMRs, initially three units in North Wales. The company is also working with ČEZ on deployments at Temelín, with potential for additional units at Tušimice and Dětmarovice, and has been selected by Videberg Kraft to deliver three SMRs on Sweden’s Värö Peninsula.
“Rolls-Royce SMR is transforming the way nuclear projects are delivered, to give greater cost and schedule certainty with a standardized, factory-built approach,” said Stacy O’Brien, head of procurement enterprise at Rolls-Royce SMR. “ABB has a long and impressive record of delivering automation and electrification solutions to energy infrastructure projects and this agreement brings an opportunity to consider how we can further strengthen our delivery team.”
“We are delighted to explore how we can work with Rolls-Royce SMR on its efforts to develop a global fleet of SMRs that can help expand reliable and affordable baseload power capacity to meet an increasing demand for low-carbon energy,” said Per Erik Holsten, president of ABB’s energy industries division. “Collaboration is also key – no single company or country alone can deliver the scale of energy expansion and energy transformation required to meet future demand. Partnerships along the energy value chain are instrumental for accelerating the commercialization of modern, advanced nuclear technologies.”

About Rolls-Royce SMR

Rolls-Royce SMR develops small modular nuclear reactor power stations for electricity generation. Founded in 2021, the company is headquartered in Manchester, United Kingdom. Its design uses pressurized water reactor technology and modular construction, with components manufactured and tested off-site. Each power station is designed to generate up to 470 megawatts of electricity using about 1,500 transportable modules. Rolls-Royce SMR handles reactor engineering, manufacturing development, regulatory licensing and deployment planning for nuclear power projects. Customers and project partners include governments, utilities and organizations developing nuclear generation capacity. The company has been selected for projects in the United Kingdom and Czech Republic. Its reactor design is undergoing regulatory assessment for deployment in several markets. Rolls-Royce SMR also operates offices in Warrington and Derby.
