ZURICH, Switzerland, Apr 15, 2026 – ABB will supply high-power mill drive systems for Harmony Gold Mining Company’s Eva Copper Mine in Queensland, Australia, adding 24 MW and 18 MW drive capacity to the open-pit operation. The order covers grinding systems for SAG and ball mill processing at the site.

Booked in Q4-2025, the contract includes a 24 MW gearless mill drive (GMD) for a 40-foot SAG mill and an 18 MW variable-speed dual-pinion ring-geared mill drive (RMD) for a 27-foot ball mill. The mine is designed to produce about 60,000 tons of copper annually over a minimum 15-year life.

ABB will deploy mill drive systems to operate grinding circuits in a concentrator using processing flowsheets. The contract reflects demand for critical metals and activity in large-scale mining projects in Australia, with the energy transition as a driver. The order also adds to ABB’s global installed base of gearless and ring-geared mill drives.

“ABB will bring together local manufacturing capabilities, global expertise and proven technologies to support Queensland’s most significant new mining project,” said Björn Jonsson, global business line manager, mining & materials, at ABB’s process industries division. “Our mill drive systems will support reliable, efficient grinding at the heart of the Eva Copper Mine Project, which will play a pivotal role in strengthening the copper supply chain to support the global energy transition.”

The project includes an eHouse engineered and manufactured in Australia to meet local standards and safety requirements. Engineering work will be coordinated across ABB teams in Australia, Finland, and Switzerland.

The GMD and RMD systems are configured to maintain mill operation and support continuous ore processing over the life of the mine.
