ZURICH, Switzerland, Aug 12, 2025 – ABB will invest more than CAD 130 million (about USD 100 million) to expand R&D and production of its power protection and grid resilience technologies in Canada. The project will consolidate ABB’s Iberville and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu operations into a new greenfield facility in Montreal, Quebec. The expansion is intended to support demand from sectors such as utilities, renewable energy, transportation, and residential and infrastructure projects across Canada.

The new manufacturing and R&D facility measures 340,000 square feet, making it more than 33% larger than the two current sites it will replace. By consolidating the ABB operations at Iberville and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, the facility will bring together over 600 employees from manufacturing, R&D, engineering, testing, and support functions. The plant will feature production automation and digital technology. As production expands and new product lines are added over time, the site is expected to generate additional jobs.

“Our investment will support our future growth in Canada, as demand increases with customers focused on grid resilience, power distribution and renewables, and in new transportation, buildings and infrastructure projects,” said Khalid Mandri, president, ABB Installation Products. “The teams in our advanced new facility will deliver products and innovation that will help power businesses and homes across the country. Together with recent investments made in the US and in Europe, the opening of this new facility will be a key part of our global growth strategy.”

The new site is expected to open in mid-2027 and will be located in the south shore region of Montreal, Quebec. The new building will integrate energy-efficient electrical equipment and heating systems to reduce energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions by over 95%, compared with the two existing facilities.

The project is supported by funding of CAD 16 million (USD 12 million) from Investissement Québec.

Currently, more than 80% of ABB Installation Products sold in Canada are manufactured or assembled within the country. About 70% of the materials used are sourced locally, including all steel and aluminum, which come from Canadian suppliers.

This project represents ABB’s major capital investment in Canada. In the past 10 years, ABB has invested about $275 million in its Canadian operations. The funds have gone toward facility upgrades, automation technology integration, and expanding local production and workforce development.
