ABB to Support Ferrari Hypersail’s Onboard DC Microgrid

The 48- and 800-volt system will manage renewable generation, storage and power distribution for navigation, foil controls, safety and propulsion.

ZURICH, Switzerland, Sep 16, 2026 – ABB will support Ferrari Hypersail’s onboard DC microgrid integration as the offshore sailing project’s electrification partner. The self-sufficient system will operate at 48 and 800V, supplying navigation, foil controls, safety systems and propulsion.

The microgrid will balance renewable generation, storage and power distribution amid extreme cold, salt spray, pressure and motion. ABB brings more than 25 years of DC experience and over 700 patents, covering marine electrical systems, energy management and integration. The project will test electrical resilience and efficiency offshore.

ABB expects findings from the project to inform its work on industrial microgrids and electrical systems for shipping, data centers and renewable energy infrastructure.

About Ferrari Hypersail

Ferrari Hypersail is Ferrari’s offshore sailing project, established in 2025 to develop a foiling ocean-racing yacht. The program is based in Maranello, Italy. It is building a 100-foot monohull designed by naval architect Guillaume Verdier. The yacht uses a canting keel and foils to lift its hull above water. Ferrari plans to launch the vessel in 2026, followed by testing and development. The project is developing sailing systems, energy-management hardware and materials for offshore racing. Its crew is expected to include 8-12 sailors. Ferrari said the yacht will operate without a combustion engine and generate power from wind, solar and kinetic sources.
