Leading artificial intelligence developers known for fierce competition have joined forces to support the next generation of AI startups through a new accelerator program called F/ai. Based in Paris and hosted by Station F, one of Europe’s largest tech incubators, the initiative brings together major Western AI labs, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Mistral, as well as infrastructure partners such as AWS, AMD, Qualcomm, and OVH Cloud. The collaboration marks a rare moment of cooperation among companies that otherwise compete aggressively in building foundational AI models and platforms, tells Wired.com.

F/ai is designed to support early-stage startups that are building software and services on top of existing large language models and related AI frameworks. Twice a year, the accelerator will admit about 20 companies into a three-month program providing mentorship, access to computing resources, workshops with technical and business experts, and connections to potential investors and customers. While the program does not offer direct funding, partner firms have committed over $1 million in credits and services to participants, including cloud compute and AI model access, effectively reducing barriers for startups that lack capital but have promising ideas and talent.

A core goal of the accelerator is to help European startups commercialize their AI products more quickly and strengthen the local tech ecosystem. Europe has lagged behind the United States and China in attracting investment and scaling AI companies to global prominence. By offering early support tailored to commercial outcomes, F/ai aims to bridge that gap and help startups reach revenue milestones that make them more attractive to venture capital or strategic partners.

For established AI labs, participation in F/ai reflects a strategic interest in cultivating a broader developer base around their foundational models and tools. By fostering startups that build within their ecosystems, these companies hope to accelerate innovation and ensure that future AI applications remain compatible with their offerings. The initiative underscores the industry’s recognition that collaboration on infrastructure and developer support can coexist with competition at the frontier of AI research and product development.
