HSINCHU, Taiwan, Sep 5, 2025 – AUO has partnered with Garmin to introduce the Garmin fēnix 8 Pro MicroLED, the first smartwatch built with MicroLED display technology. The 1.4-inch screen packs pixel density of 326 PPI, designed to improve clarity, brightness and durability for outdoor adventures.
“We are proud to collaborate with Garmin to launch the first Micro LED smartwatch,” said Dr. Wei-Lung Liau, chief technology officer of AUO. “This milestone not only showcases the innovation of Micro LED in wearable applications but also marks a significant step toward commercialization. With AUO’s deep expertise in Micro LED R&D and streamlined process integration, we work with our partners to bring differentiated, high-performance wearable solutions to market.”
“We are proud to collaborate with AUO to bring the trailblazing fēnix 8 Pro MicroLED smartwatch to athletes and adventurers who push the limits of what’s possible. The ultrabright emissive display offers unprecedented clarity and resolution in sunny outdoor conditions, setting a new standard for smartwatch display technology,” said Joe Schrick, Garmin executive vice president of fitness and outdoor segments.
Garmin’s fēnix 8 Pro uses a MicroLED display built on AUO’s LTPS active-matrix backplane with more than 400,000 inorganic micro LEDs. The screen matches the resolution and 326ppi pixel density of Garmin’s other premium models. This setup provides high image quality, fast response, long service life, and visibility in bright sun and low light, including mountain trails, night runs, and intense activity. MicroLED fabrication allows custom shapes, enabling a circular display that fits the watch face.
AUO has invested in MicroLED development, advancing display technology and manufacturing to support applications from TVs to automotive displays. Its ecosystem spans chip design, mass transfer, packaging and driver IC integration, enabling commercial adoption. The Garmin fēnix 8 Pro MicroLED smartwatch marks MicroLED’s entry into consumer wearables, in the category of everyday use.
