Bechtel Takes Over Poland Nuclear Site as Earthworks Begin

by | Aug 11, 2026

Initial work at the 300-hectare Choczewo site includes grading, drainage upgrades and 16 kilometers of temporary roads

WARSAW, Poland, Aug 11, 2026 – Bechtel has taken over management of the Choczewo site, where Poland’s first AP1000 nuclear power plant is planned, as initial earthworks begin. The handover from Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) moves the project from planning, permitting and design into site preparation and construction.

As site manager, Bechtel will oversee construction activities, coordinate contractors, supervise and manage site safety. More than 400 people are working on the project, including about one-third hired in Poland. The workforce is expected to grow as site activity increases.

“As we assume responsibility for the site and begin the first permanent plant work, with the initial earthworks contract, we are focused on safely advancing the project, working closely with our Polish partners, and creating the platform for the next phase of work that will ultimately deliver a new source of reliable, carbon-free energy for Poland,” said Bechtel project director Ed Gore.

Site Preparation Work Begins

Initial work at the 300-hectare (740-acre) site includes grading and leveling, drainage upgrades and construction of about 16 kilometers of temporary roads. The work also includes preparing areas for construction offices, logistics facilities, warehouses, equipment maintenance areas and supporting infrastructure. Budimex will carry out the site preparation activities. Bechtel has signed contracts with DORACO and Unihouse and continues dozens of procurement processes for the project. PEJ has awarded contracts to about 475 Polish businesses since 2020, including based in the Pomerania region.

Gdansk Office and Project Staffing

Bechtel employees will work in part from the company’s office in Pomerania. The Gdansk office is expected to employ about 200 people as the project progresses, with most hires based in Poland.
