
PCMag argues that smart glasses do not need cameras to become useful everyday devices. Camera-equipped models have faced growing criticism because they can record people discreetly, creating privacy concerns that risk damaging the reputation of the broader smart-glasses category. Camera-free designs may offer a better path forward.
One reason to remove cameras is that smartphones already handle photography better. Smart-glasses cameras use small sensors and lenses that limit image quality, especially in low light. The Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, for example, captures 12-megapixel photos and 3K vertical video, but its compact hardware cannot match the imaging flexibility of modern smartphones. Phones also make it easier to frame shots, zoom in, and review exactly what the camera captures.
The more promising technology may be waveguide displays. These systems use patterns built into transparent lenses to direct light from small projectors toward the wearer’s eyes. They can present notifications, navigation directions, captions, translations, and other information without requiring a camera. Current waveguide glasses still have limitations, including usability challenges and reliability issues, but PCMag sees considerable potential as the technology improves.
Several manufacturers are already developing camera-free models. Even Realities G2 and Captify Pro omit cameras, while Xgimi’s MemoMind specifically promotes the absence of a camera as a feature. Newly announced RayNeo iO Smart Glasses and Halliday G2 are also expected to combine displays and AI capabilities without cameras.
The shift suggests that privacy could become a product advantage rather than a limitation. Smart glasses can provide digital information directly within a user’s field of view without continuously pointing a camera at other people. By concentrating on displays, notifications, translation, navigation, and AI assistance, manufacturers could make smart glasses more socially acceptable while preserving many of their most useful functions.
