
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is driving unprecedented growth in U.S. electricity demand, with data centers expected to become one of the nation’s largest new sources of power consumption. According to an analysis by Energy Innovation, the critical question is not whether enough electricity can be generated, but which energy strategy will meet this demand at the lowest cost. The study concludes that relying primarily on clean energy is substantially less expensive than expanding fossil fuel generation, tells Forbes.com.
The report estimates that serving future data center demand with fossil fuel generation would increase annual electricity costs by approximately $30 billion. In contrast, a strategy centered on renewable energy, battery storage, transmission upgrades, and demand flexibility would add only about $5 billion per year while providing a more resilient and efficient electricity system. Much of the savings comes from the declining cost of solar, wind, and battery technologies, which can now outcompete new gas-fired generation in many regions.
Rather than treating data centers solely as new electricity consumers, the analysis argues they can become valuable grid participants. Many AI facilities have workloads that can be shifted in time or location, allowing operators to adjust electricity use during periods of high demand or abundant renewable generation. This flexibility reduces strain on the grid and lowers the need for expensive backup infrastructure. Modern transmission planning and expanded energy storage further improve system reliability while integrating larger shares of renewable electricity.
The study also challenges the assumption that AI-driven electricity demand inevitably requires a large expansion of fossil fuel capacity. Instead, it argues that streamlined permitting, accelerated transmission construction, and faster deployment of clean energy projects can satisfy rising demand while limiting emissions and protecting consumers from higher utility bills.
As investment in AI infrastructure accelerates, the report concludes that policy choices made today will determine whether data center growth becomes an economic burden or an opportunity to modernize America’s electric grid. By prioritizing clean energy, grid flexibility, and transmission expansion, the United States can support AI development while minimizing long-term electricity costs, strengthening grid reliability, and advancing its broader energy transition.
