
Rapid growth in artificial intelligence, cloud services, and high-performance computing is driving a major data center construction boom. While attention often centers on power capacity, cooling, and costs, Architosh contributor Dave Wagner argues that managing project information has become equally important to successful delivery.
Data center projects involve hundreds of organizations, thousands of decisions, and millions of pieces of information. Yet documents, emails, drawings, models, meeting records, and instant messages often remain scattered across separate platforms. The problem is therefore not insufficient information but a lack of connections between information and the context surrounding it.
This fragmentation is particularly challenging because data center systems are highly interdependent. Changes to electrical distribution can affect mechanical loads, while cooling decisions influence rack layouts. Equipment availability can alter construction sequencing. Teams must understand not only what changed but also why a decision was made and what other systems it affects.
The article argues that traditional document management alone cannot provide this context. Project teams use tools such as Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Bluebeam, and BIM applications. Rather than replacing these platforms with one system, organizations need to connect information across them.
Maintaining an audit trail is also essential. Decisions increasingly occur through emails, messages, and virtual meetings, making their reasoning difficult to reconstruct months later. Preserving this history can become critical during disputes, commissioning, warranty claims, renovations, and expansions.
Reliable information is especially important during data center commissioning, when power, cooling, networking, security, fire protection, and backup systems undergo extensive testing.
Wagner argues that connected project information should now be treated as critical infrastructure. By linking documents, communications, decisions, and activities into a trusted project record, teams can reduce time spent searching for answers, limit uncertainty, and make better decisions throughout construction and long-term facility operations.
