FRANKFURT, Germany, Dec 17, 2025 – Diehl Aerospace is developing avionics technology that lets fighter pilots, including those flying the Eurofighter, coordinate with drones during flight. The upgrade supports manned-unmanned teaming and future networked air combat operations.
The concept centers on an added control and display unit (tablet), that integrates with existing aircraft systems without major changes. The unit is designed to show pilots a consolidated operational view, including mission data, flight routes, and live video feeds from unmanned aerial vehicles. With this technology, pilots could receive reconnaissance data in real time and use it to support strategic decisions. The technology could also allow pilots to control drones during flight.
“Our goal is to quickly and pragmatically upgrade existing fighter aircraft to meet new requirements,” says Florian Maier, CEO of Diehl Aerospace. “Our developments are an important contribution to ensuring Europe’s air defense is ready for the future.”
EASY Upgrade, Intuitive Operation
Diehl Aerospace aims to add new mission capabilities without altering certified aircraft systems. The approach extends existing mission systems and pilot interfaces, reducing the need for redesigns or recertification.
One technical challenge is managing and displaying large volumes of real-time data. The company is developing algorithms to present mission information clearly during flight. An initial demonstrator confirms the concept is technically feasible and can integrate into current cockpit environments.
Florian Maier, CEO of Diehl Aerospace adds: “Europe needs connected, interoperable systems – from today’s platforms and fighter aircraft to the integration of future capabilities. Upgrading existing aircraft is a decisive step to ensuring their long-term operational readiness.”
