Evidence Builds That Autonomous Cars Can Save Lives

Evidence supporting the safety benefits of autonomous vehicles is growing, although researchers caution that current data still has limitations. Studies suggest self-driving vehicles crash less frequently than human-driven cars, while advanced driver-assistance systems are already reducing collisions, injuries, and insurance claims, tells IEEE Spectrum.

Research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows that automatic emergency braking systems capable of detecting pedestrians reduce pedestrian crashes by 27%. Automated braking has also cut rear-end collisions by 50% and related injuries by 56%. Vehicles combining several driver-assistance features have recorded insurance-claim reductions of up to 39%.

More significant results are emerging from Level 4 autonomous vehicles. Waymo reports more than 20 million paid rides across 220 million miles. Its independent study found 92% fewer fatal or serious-injury crashes compared with human drivers operating in similar urban environments. Injury-producing intersection crashes fell by 96%.

An IIHS study provided additional evidence. Researchers compared about 50 million driverless Waymo miles with 222 billion human-driven miles in San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Austin. Waymo vehicles experienced 68% fewer police-reportable crashes overall and 81% fewer injury crashes per mile.

Direct comparisons remain difficult. Waymo operates mainly in selected cities and favorable weather, while human drivers encounter a wider range of conditions. Human crashes are also substantially underreported, whereas autonomous-vehicle operators must report even minor incidents.

Regulation is another unresolved issue. The United States lacks national autonomous-vehicle performance and safety standards, leaving states and cities with different rules. NHTSA and SAE Industry Technologies are now developing national performance and competency standards.

With roughly 1.16 million people dying globally in road crashes each year, the potential impact is substantial. If autonomous technology eventually cuts fatalities by half, it could prevent about 580,000 deaths annually, making vehicle automation a potentially important public-health intervention.
