EyeReal: A Glasses-Free 3D Display Powered by AI

Researchers at Shanghai University and Fudan University have introduced EyeReal, a new kind of 3D display that delivers full three-dimensional visuals without the need for special glasses, tells Tech Xplore. The core challenge in creating glasses-free 3D has long been a physics barrier known as the space–bandwidth product (SBP). SBP limits the simultaneous size of the screen and the viewing angle: earlier 3D solutions required trade-offs, leading to tiny displays or narrow viewing ranges.

EyeReal sidesteps this limitation by combining real-time eye tracking with a deep-learning system that calculates and sends a precise light field only to the viewer’s eyes. Instead of projecting the 3D effect to the entire room, the system adjusts output dynamically, based on where the viewer’s eyes and head are.

The prototype uses a stack of three ordinary LCD panels, a sensor to track eye and head position, and an AI engine to compute optimal light-field patterns. It achieves more than 100-degree viewing range, full-parallax 3D (including stereo, motion, and focus cues), 50+ Hz refresh rate, and a resolution of 1920 × 1080, all on desktop-scale displays.

In tests with both computer-generated and real-world images, EyeReal delivered a natural, comfortable 3D experience that remained consistent even as the viewer moved. The team sees this as a path to next-generation displays: large-screen 3D movies, immersive design work, VR experiences, education, and visualization, all without bulky glasses.

Going forward, the challenge will be scaling the system for multiple simultaneous viewers. Still, EyeReal shows that with smart use of computation and optics, we might soon get truly practical glasses-free 3D.
