Ford is taking an unconventional approach to vehicle secrecy by transforming the camouflage on its upcoming electric pickup prototypes into a communication tool. Rather than hiding development details from curious observers, the company has embedded QR codes into the camouflage wrap, allowing anyone who spots the test vehicles to access videos and information about the truck’s development. The strategy offers a rare look inside Ford’s engineering process as it prepares an affordable electric pickup based on its new Universal EV Platform for launch in 2027, tells Design News.

The QR codes direct users to a dedicated website featuring updates from members of the development team. Engineers and program leaders discuss the project’s objectives, testing activities, and manufacturing innovations. Ford presents the initiative as an opportunity to showcase the work behind the vehicle while building anticipation for a new generation of electric trucks designed to be more affordable and accessible to a broader market.

A major focus of the project is manufacturing efficiency. According to Ford engineers, the vehicle has been designed with significantly fewer parts and a simpler assembly process than conventional vehicle programs. Team members involved in building prototypes report that the truck has been easier to assemble than any previous Ford prototype they have worked on.
