MUNICH, Germany, July 23, 2026 – Gauss Fusion has appointed Dr. Uwe Bau as chief executive officer (CEO) following completion of the Gauss GIGA conceptual design, as the company moves the fusion power platform into engineering, testing and technology validation.
Dr. Bau and chief corporate development officer Abraham Taherivand have also been appointed managing directors of Gauss Fusion GmbH in Garching, Germany. Founder Dr. Frank Laukien has returned to his role as executive chair of the board, joined by vice chair Dr. Michael Peiniger.
Dr. Bau holds an engineering doctorate from RWTH Aachen, Germany. He researched energy systems at Forschungszentrum Jülich before joining McKinsey & Company as an energy business consultant.
He joins Gauss Fusion from RI Research Instruments, where he served as business section head for Semicon OEM Technologies. His responsibilities included corporate strategy, digitalization and new ventures.
The leadership changes follow completion of the integrated Conceptual Design Report for the Gauss GIGA fusion power platform. The report defines the system architecture, interfaces and technology development requirements for engineering, testing, maturation and industrial validation.
Gauss Fusion is developing a high-field stellarator design, Demountable Mitchell Magnets (DMM), and the HEXA tritium breeding and fuel-cycle system. The company is also working on high-TRL 170 GHz ECHR plasma heating and divertor technology. The technologies address the manufacturing, installation, operation and maintenance requirements of fusion power plants. Gauss Fusion plans development, testing and technology readiness level maturation before an industrial demonstration and a fusion power plant.
Dr. Frank H. Laukien, founder and executive chair of Gauss Fusion, commented: “Gauss has completed its strategy review, roadmap evolution and leadership transition. I am delighted to welcome Dr. Uwe Bau as our new CEO. Together with our excellent executive and technical leadership, Gauss now pursues the next phase of our unique fusion technology development and performance validation, TRL-maturation and industrial demonstration.”
Dr. Uwe Bau, chief executive officer and a managing director of Gauss Fusion, said: “Gauss Fusion has a clear strategy, unique fusion technologies and a credible roadmap, and is now focused on performance validation and milestone delivery. Our priority is to build on the foundations of the CDR with disciplined execution across our proprietary technologies, towards industrial demonstration, a first-of-a-kind, and commercial fusion power plants.”
“Drawing on the wealth of technical, industrial and entrepreneurial expertise across the company, I am looking forward to engaging with strategic partners, investors, public institutions and the fusion ecosystem, as our journey advances to this next exciting phase towards realizing fusion.”
