Goodfellow has expanded its U.S. micromachining operations with laser systems at its engineering center in Columbia, MD. The company invested more than £1.5 million in the 15,000-square-foot facility.
The equipment supports machining at fine tolerances and the production of microscale components. The expansion also increases its materials capabilities and capacity for high-volume programs, with shorter lead times.
The company has secured a multimillion-dollar deal with an AI processor manufacturer. It also plans to create up to 20 jobs, bringing its U.S. workforce to 60.
“This expansion reflects our commitment to production in the US, as well as providing an advanced global hub for our micromachining business,” explained Simon Kenney, CEO of Goodfellow.
“As Artificial Intelligence (AI), aerospace, and medical technologies push the boundaries of what’s possible, we’re investing in the capacity and capability to be a true manufacturing partner to companies shaping the future of these industries.”
“With this investment comes a real opportunity to expand our export business, which accounts for 80% of annual sales.”
More than 100 delegates from the local business community attended the facility’s ribbon-cutting and opening. Attendees included representatives from the Howard County Chamber of Commerce, Howard County Economic Development Authority and Howard County Council.
Simon added: “This facility represents a significant investment in our global manufacturing footprint. It’s a statement of our confidence in the Goodfellow brand, our capabilities and in the future of precision engineering.”
Lori Kleppin, director of membership and external affairs at Howard County Chamber of Commerce, concluded: “Goodfellow is exactly the type of advanced manufacturer we want to attract and cultivate in this region, and we welcome the additional investment into its new precision engineering center.”
