MILAN, Italy, Oct 13, 2025 – Hexagon is advancing digital transformation at its Moncalieri and Grugliasco plants in Italy’s Piedmont region. The initiatives aim to improve production efficiency, optimize resource use, and reduce environmental impact.

Energy Digital Twin for Production Efficiency at Grugliasco

At the Grugliasco plant, Hexagon’s headquarters and the production center for measuring machines, the company is developing an energy digital twin focused on digitalization and energy efficiency.

In the initial phase, Hexagon used its Leica 3D scanning technology to capture a point cloud of the facility. The resulting 3D digital factory model supports spatial analysis and planning. It helps optimize machine layout and structural issues, such as low or obstructing pillars that could block new equipment installation.

Innovation in Production Processes at Moncalieri

The Moncalieri plant, which specializes in machining , has focused on reducing waste through initiatives like:

The introduction of LED lighting has reduced emissions by 250 tCO2e, representing 52% of the overall reduction potential. The reconfiguration of heating systems and insulation have reduced gas consumption compared to the 2013-2019 average, down 37% at Grugliasco, and 6.5% at Moncalieri, reducing an additional 130 tCO₂e and 7 tCO₂e respectively.

Digitalization efforts have reduced paper usage, reducing about 4 tons of CO₂ emissions annually. In 2025, new photovoltaic panels will supply 44% of the plant’s electricity based on 2023 consumption levels. Together, these actions lower emissions equal to the annual carbon footprint of more than 100 Italian residents. The projects are part of Hexagon’s global factory efficiency program, which focuses on improving manufacturing sustainability.

“We are very proud of the results achieved to date at our plants in Moncalieri and Grugliasco,” said Luca Ruggiero, managing director of sales at Hexagon’s manufacturing intelligence division in Italy, “These projects are key elements of our global vision and demonstrate how technological innovation and energy efficiency can converge to deliver value for both business and the environment. They are a concrete example of how it is possible to achieve tangible results in terms of sustainability without compromising business competitiveness.”

“We firmly believe in the manufacturing sector’s potential to drive the transition to a more sustainable future,” added Fabrizio Pescetto, managing director of manufacturing at Hexagon’s manufacturing intelligence division in Italy. “Our Italian plants exemplify our ongoing commitment to reducing waste and embracing renewable energy sources.”
