HEERBRUGG, Switzerland, Aug 11, 2025 – Building subsea tunnels requires precision to avoid errors and delays. Norway’s ‘Project Rogfast’, a 27-kilometer tunnel, is using Hexagon surveying technology to improve accuracy, safety, and efficiency under underwater conditions. Set to run 392 meters below sea level, the project – led by Skanska – will connect Stavanger, Haugesund, and Bergen, reducing travel time by half and supporting economic links in the region’s oil and gas sector.

The work uses Hexagon geospatial and construction solutions to align tunneling from both ends within centimeters. This precision helps reduce rework, manage costs, and maintain safe progress in a complex engineering environment.

Project Rogfast’ faces notable engineering challenges, such as tunneling from both ends to meet within a 5-centimeter margin of error. Even minor misalignment can lead to rework and delays. Leica Geosystems solutions help surveyors, excavators, and drill operators work with accurate measurements, supporting project continuity.

Hexagon’s technologies are delivering measurable impact across the project by:

  • Enabling alignment with total stations, GPS, multistations, and laser scanners
  • Reducing rework, emissions, and cost through real-time data capture and validation
  • Powering safe operations under extreme conditions, 392 meters below sea level

“In a project like this, even a millimeter of misalignment can trigger cascading risks,” said Trond Valleur, vice president, Skanska. “Hexagon’s technology gives our teams the confidence to move forward with accuracy, efficiency, and safety. That precision, and our shared drive to push boundaries, is what makes this partnership so powerful.”

“This project is a milestone for infrastructure and a testament to how measurement technologies are reshaping what’s possible,” said Burkhard Boeckem, CTO, Hexagon. “We’re proud to support Skanska with solutions that enable their teams to work smarter and safer with accuracy.”

The tunnel also represents the strength of Skanska and Hexagon’s 30-year partnership, rooted in innovation and shared ambition. Skanska use an array of Hexagon tools, including the Leica RTC360, Leica MS60 MultiStation, Leica AP20 AutoPole, and Leica TS60.

Together, Skanska and Hexagon are shaping the future of infrastructure, combining digital excellence and construction expertise beneath the sea.
