Japan Airlines Backs JetZero Z4 Blended Wing Aircraft

Carrier will help define specifications, ground operations and maintenance planning before expected early-2030s service
Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (JAL) announced its support and interest in JetZero’s Z4 program.

TOKYO, Japan and FARNBOROUGH, UK (Farnborough Air Show), July 21, 2026 – Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (JAL) has announced its support for JetZero‘s Z4, a blended wing body (BWB) aircraft designed to seat 250 passengers and fly up to 5,000 nm. JetZero says the design could reduce fuel use by 30-50% compared with aircrafts flying today. To Jal, the aircraft is a potential fit for its future network strategy, citing lower operating costs, environmental impact, and positive passenger and crew experience.

The BWB design distributes lift across the entire wingspan, reducing drag compared with conventional tube-and-wing aircraft. JetZero describes the Z4 as the first commercial aircraft built on this design. The Z4 will operate within existing airport infrastructure without any specialized gate or ground equipment modifications.

JAL and JetZero will collaborate on operations, maintenance, and design aspects of the Z4 to prepare the aircraft for commercial service. JAL plans to remain engaged with JetZero through the aircraft’s development and certification process.

JetZero anticipates that Z4 will enter service in the early 2030s.

JAL and JetZero will collaborate across three areas:

  • Z4 specifications – Defining the aircraft’s baseline specifications by incorporating JAL’s expertise in flight operations, cabin services, maintenance, and ground handling.
  • Airport infrastructure and ground operations – Jointly evaluating gate management and ground handling methods for the Z4.
  • Future MRO Business Development – Exploring a JetZero-approved MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) framework to support Z4 operations and create business opportunities after the aircraft enters service.
