LONG BEACH, CA, Aug 26, 2025 – Work is underway to bring liquid hydrogen fuel closer to commercial flight. JetZero is collaborating with SHZ Advanced Technologies to adapt patented liquid hydrogen (LH₂) storage and distribution systems for a potential Z4 aircraft variant.
JetZero and SHZ Advanced Technologies will work together under the NASA Advanced Aircraft Concepts for Environmental Sustainability 2050 (AACES) project to analyze and design technical storage and distribution solutions enabling the adaptation of liquid hydrogen in commercial air transport. JetZero was awarded an AACES grant in November 2024 to “explore technologies that enable cryogenic, liquid hydrogen to be used as a fuel for commercial aviation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” according to NASA.
A new aircraft design could change how airlines reduce emissions. JetZero’s Z4 all-wing plane uses a wide fuselage that improves lift, reduces drag, and accommodates LH2 fuel tanks without reducing passenger seating. The Z4, initially using conventional jet fuel, is expected to improve fuel efficiency by up to 50% and help airlines meet Net Zero 2050 goals. Engines mounted on top of the airplane are designed to reduce noise near airports by up to four times.
SHZ Advanced Technologies, with 14 patents including non-conventional LH2 storage and an LH2 compressor-pump, will work with JetZero to develop systems designed to lower aviation emissions and supporting a transition to lower-carbon air travel.

About JetZero

JetZero, founded in 2021 and headquartered in Long Beach, CA, is an aviation startup developing blended wing body (BWB) aircraft to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Their designs integrate the wings and fuselage into a single structure, enhancing aerodynamic efficiency and offering potential fuel savings of up to 50% compared to traditional aircraft. Serving both commercial and military aviation sectors, JetZero has secured partnerships with organizations like the U.S. Air Force, NASA, and the FAA. In August 2023, the U.S. Air Force awarded JetZero a $235 million contract to develop a full-scale demonstrator, with a first flight expected by 2027. The company employs approximately 128 people and has raised significant funding to advance its innovative aircraft designs.
