Joby Expands Marina Site to Scale eVTOL Aircraft Production

by | Jul 16, 2025

A facility expansion increases annual aircraft production capacity to 24 units. Along with the certification of a new test aircraft, this supports the planned scale-up of electric air mobility operations.

SANTA CRUZ, CA, July 16, 2025 – Joby Aviation has expanded its Marina, California facility to double production capacity as it prepares for commercial launch. Spanning approximately 435,500 square feet, the site will support manufacturing, testing, and operations scale-up. Joby expanded its flight test program by adding a new aircraft to its fleet.

“Reimagining urban mobility takes speed, scale, and precision manufacturing. Our expanded manufacturing footprint in both California and Ohio is preparing us to do just that,” said Eric Allison, chief product officer, Joby Aviation. “We celebrated the opening of the new facility with the flight of our sixth aircraft, which earned airworthiness certification within a week of completion.”

The opening of the new manufacturing space is a step forward as Joby gets ready to scale production.. Achieving this comes down to three key strengths:

  • Committed to American Innovation: Joby designs, builds and tests its aircraft in the United States, using teams based in California and Ohio. The company uses data analytics and 3D printing to produce flexible components. With the expansion of its Marina facility, Joby plans to create hundreds of full-time jobs to support aircraft production.
  • Advantage of Vertical Integration: Joby manages design, manufacturing, pilot training and operations for its aircraft and air taxi service in-house. This vertical integration speed-up development, ensure quality, and accelerate testing and certification. It also allows Joby adapt its platform for applications including the hybrid hydrogen-electric propulsion testing.
  • Close Collaboration with Toyota: Toyota engineers are deeply integrated with the Joby team, offering assistance in design, manufacturing and quality. Toyota also assists Joby optimize processes, simplify assembly, and offers advice on developing custom tooling to meet production goals.

When operational, the Marina site is expected to produce up to 24 aircraft per year. The facility will support initial FAA production certification, ground and flight testing of components, pilot training simulators, and aircraft maintenance. This site is part of Joby’s manufacturing network, which includes three other locations: Santa Cruz, CA, for innovation and system architecture; San Carlos, CA, for powertrain and electronics; and Dayton, OH, for component manufacturing and testing on the Pilot Production Line. The Dayton facility will demonstrate capabilities for FAA production certification and help scale Joby’s operations. Equipment installation is underway, with plans to increase production to up to 500 aircraft per year at that site.

Support from the local workforce, community organizations, elected officials, city and county leaders, and nonprofit partners played a key role in establishing the facility. In 2023, Joby received a $9.8 million grant from the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) to support its expansion. The company also lowered equipment costs by $10 million through a program offered by the California State Treasurer’s Office, aiding its plans to scale production.
