ModuleWorks: ISCAR Adopts MDES for Tooling Data

by | Apr 8, 2026

Covers ISCAR tool and assembly data, imports through open MDES format, and supports CAD, CAM, and CNC workflows

AACHEN, Germany, Apr 8, 2026 – ModuleWorks said ISCAR will adopt the Manufacturing Data Exchange Specification (MDES), and provide its tooling data in the open MDES format. CAM software and CNC systems that support MDES can import ISCAR tools and assemblies directly, without using custom interfaces or proprietary data formats.

ISCAR’s adoption of MDES adds its tooling data to a shared format used across manufacturing software domain. CAM and CNC applications can import ISCAR tool and assembly data into machining workflows that handle tool definitions and setups.

Meir Noybauer, business development officer at ISCAR said: “CAM programmers rely on accurate cutting tool data to ensure efficient and reliable machining. Supplying our tooling information in the MDES format makes it easier for CAM systems to provide that data to their users, helping manufacturers reduce programming time and machine complex parts with greater confidence.”

“By making high-quality tooling data easily accessible to CAM and CNC systems, ISCAR’s adoption of MDES is an important step towards more integrated manufacturing”, said Dr. Yavuz Murtezaoglu, founder and managing director of ModuleWorks. “With more companies adopting MDES, we are seeing a rapidly growing ecosystem where data flows efficiently and reliably across the entire digital manufacturing chain.”

ISCAR joins companies using MDES to exchange data across CAD, CAM, and CNC workflows, including Autodesk, BobCAD-CAM, CHIRON Group, Cimsource, DN Solutions, and PTC.

Its software is used in industries including digital dentistry, optics, precision machining, laser manufacturing, woodworking, additive manufacturing, and digital factory operations. The company works with more than 200 partners and supports over 500,000 installed software seats worldwide. ModuleWorks employs more than 200 people across offices in Germany, Romania, Ukraine, and the UK. It supplies software components to CAD/CAM vendors, CNC control makers, machine tool builders, and cutting tool manufacturers. The company has invested about 1,700 person-years in developing toolpath and simulation technologies used in manufacturing workflows.

About MDES

Manufacturing Data Exchange Specification (MDES) is a data exchange standard used in manufacturing to share structured information between software systems and equipment. Created by ModuleWorks, it defines formats and rules for transferring data such as machine status, production metrics, tool usage, and process parameters. MDES supports integration between CAD, CAM, CNC systems, and factory management software. It also enables transfer of digital representations of manufacturing equipment, including tools, assemblies, fixtures, stock, and machining setups. Manufacturers, software vendors, and equipment providers use MDES in industries such as machining, aerospace, and industrial production. The specification provides a common framework for exchanging standardized manufacturing data across systems and workflows.
