Motif has launched a browser-native BIM authoring platform designed around the idea that AI agents should be active participants in building models rather than assistants connected through external interfaces. Developed by former Autodesk executives and engineers, the platform combines modeling, documentation, collaboration, and AI within a shared cloud environment, tells AEC Magazine.
Unlike established BIM applications where AI typically connects through an API or Model Context Protocol, Motif gives its interface, API, and agents access to the same underlying project data. Agents can therefore work directly with BIM information while people continue designing.
Motif includes parametric walls, doors, windows, floors, ceilings, and levels, supported by an accurate BRep geometry kernel. Plans, 3D views, and sheets remain connected to the same model, so changes propagate through project documentation.
Its flexible database can preserve imported information in Revit or IFC schemas while allowing multiple representations of the same objects. Motif also routes AI tasks among models from providers including Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, selecting only the project information required for each task rather than sending an entire building model to an LLM.
Demonstrations showed agents identifying doors with missing fire ratings, calculating floor areas, checking requirements, comparing design options, and navigating models through natural-language instructions. AI could also create editable parametric walls from sketches and generate BIM objects from photographs or descriptions.
Motif introduces reusable skills that allow firms to turn successful AI workflows into repeatable procedures. Project history records changes made by people and agents, while permissions, inspection, and rollback provide safeguards when AI makes mistakes.
However, Motif is not yet a complete Revit replacement. Missing capabilities include comprehensive BIM object coverage, full Revit geometry write-back, easy migration of Revit family libraries, and some interoperability features.
Its larger significance lies in treating AI agents, project data, geometry, and human designers as participants in the same BIM environment.
