BMW’s iX3 marks the debut of its “Neue Klasse” electric architecture, where software, not just hardware, drives the car’s heartbeat. Central to this evolution are four powerful onboard computers, dubbed “superbrains,” which offer 20 times the processing power of current BMW EVs. Among them, the “Heart of Joy” controller integrates drivetrain, braking, chassis systems, and energy recuperation into one finely tuned unit. It operates on a high-speed data bus at 1,000 beats per second, a huge leap from the days of sluggish, fragmented control setups, reports IEEE Spectrum.

This consolidated electronics architecture also trims 600 meters of wiring, lowering weight by about 30% and simplifying design.

On the powertrain side, the iX3 50 xDrive runs on sixth-generation eDrive tech. Dual motors deliver 345 kW (about 469 hp) and 645 Nm of torque. The optional 800-volt system charges at up to 400 kW, enough to go from 10% to 80% in just 21 minutes, or gain ~350 km in a mere 10 minutes. That nets WLTP ranges of up to 805 km (about 500 miles), or around 400 miles on the EPA scale.

The cockpit is all about software-driven simplicity. The new Panoramic iDrive system projects a customizable heads-up interface across nearly the full windshield. A 17.9-inch touchscreen sits alongside, and the system uses the latest BMW Operating System X.

Sustainability is baked in. The iX3 cuts lifecycle CO₂ output by roughly 30–34% versus its predecessor. About one-third of the materials come from recycled sources—think marine-plastic frunk covers or recycled-PET textiles—and its Hungarian plant runs without fossil fuels in normal operation.

The iX3 isn’t just a new EV; it’s a software-defined, future-ready model that streamlines hardware, stretches range, embraces digital intelligence, and pushes BMW into its next chapter.
