SANTA CLARA, CA, Sep 22, 2026 – OMNIVISION’s OAX7700 AI companion processor adapts existing exterior vehicle cameras, including surround-view systems, for always-on parking surveillance. The application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) processes detection tasks locally, reducing the workload on the vehicle’s central computing system.
In always-on mode, the camera monitors the vehicle’s surroundings at reduced power until an event triggers normal operation. The system records five to 10 seconds of pre-roll video. An electronic control unit can analyze that footage to validate the trigger and activate an alarm if necessary. The footage also documents events around the vehicle.
OMNIVISION reports that parking surveillance systems using the OAX7700 consume 97% less power than existing market alternatives. The supplied release does not identify the comparison systems or test conditions. Customers can develop AI functions beyond security and deploy over-the-air updates.
“With the OAX7700 ASIC, we are enabling existing automotive camera solutions with highly efficient parking surveillance functionality while at the same time supporting modern software-defined vehicle architectures – our customers are investing in a system that can be updated and enhanced throughout the vehicle’s lifetime,” said David Ho, senior marketing manager at OMNIVISION. “We’ve leveraged the technology from our security market segment, where OMNIVISION is recognized as a global leader.”
Key features of the OAX7700 ASIC:
- Vision AI processing through a built-in NPU, for reduced-power operation.
- Support for 24/7 monitoring.
- Customer-developed algorithms for human detection, object classification and distance estimation.
- Trigger filtering to distinguish threat objects, avoids false triggers from non-threat motions.
- Stacked PSRAM and flash memory in a 60-pin BGA package.
The OAX7700 package measures 5.5 mm by 3.5 mm. Samples are available, with mass production scheduled for Q1-2027.
