HANOVER, MD, Aug 12, 2026 – Phillips Corporation has announced the winners of its 2024–2025 Machinist Design and Machining Student Competition, an annual contest run through The Phillips Machinist App that pairs students with industry partners to solve manufacturing problems.
The competition drew more than 67 students on 25 teams from high schools, community colleges, and universities across the United States. Nine teams advanced to the final round after completing projects over several months. Teams worked with local manufacturers to identify production challenges before designing their solutions.
Team Number 1 from Wayne Community College in North Carolina won first place and the grand prize for its RC Auger Project. The prize included a trip to California and certificates from Haas Automation and Markforged. The AMS Bulldogs from Mississippi State University placed second, and The Wolf Pack from Virginia Highlands Community College placed third.
Students attended technical sessions led by Phillips experts that covered industrial additive manufacturing, Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) principles, and production workflows.
The Phillips Machinist App, which hosts the competition, is a free mobile resource. It provides machinists, students, educators, and manufacturing professionals with calculators, tooling references, G- and M-code resources, learning content, productivity tools, and industry news.
On the purpose of the competition, Lauren Ramsey, vice president of US Marketing, Phillips Corporation said: “Programs like the Phillips Machinist Design and Machining Student Competition are about much more than recognizing outstanding student projects – they’re about investing in the future of manufacturing. By bringing together education, industry partners, machining, and additive manufacturing technologies, we’re helping students develop the technical skills, creative thinking, and real-world experience they’ll carry into tomorrow’s manufacturing workforce.”
The winners were announced by Mark Terryberry, host of Haas Automation’s “Tip of the Day” series, during an awards presentation shared across Phillips Corporation’s digital channels.
