
China’s rapidly expanding electric vehicle industry may soon rely less on newly mined materials and more on recycled batteries from retired EVs. According to new research highlighted by Ars Technica, the country’s growing fleet of aging electric vehicles could become a major domestic source of lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, and other critical materials needed for manufacturing new batteries. This shift could strengthen China’s already dominant EV supply chain while reducing dependence on imported raw materials.
The study examined the chemical composition of batteries and electric motors alongside projections for vehicle retirement. Researchers found that as the first large generation of Chinese EVs reaches the end of its service life, recycling will recover increasing quantities of valuable materials. Over time, these recovered resources could meet a significant share of demand for battery manufacturing, particularly as recycling technologies and collection systems continue to improve.
The analysis also emphasizes that different battery chemistries influence the value of recycled materials. Older batteries containing larger amounts of nickel and cobalt offer high recovery potential, while the growing use of lithium iron phosphate batteries changes the mix of materials available for recycling. Permanent magnets from electric motors also represent an important source of rare earth elements, adding another layer of value to the recycling process.
Researchers argue that recycling alone will not immediately eliminate the need for mining because EV production continues to grow rapidly. However, recycled materials are expected to play an increasingly important role as more vehicles reach retirement age. Developing efficient collection, dismantling, and recycling infrastructure will therefore be essential to realizing this opportunity.
The findings reinforce the importance of a circular economy for the EV industry. Instead of viewing retired vehicles as waste, manufacturers can treat them as a valuable source of raw materials that supports future production. For China, which already leads global EV manufacturing and battery production, this approach could further strengthen supply chain resilience, reduce environmental impacts associated with mining, and help sustain long-term growth in electric mobility.
