TOKYO, Japan, July 10, 2025 – Renesas Electronics has introduced the RA2T1 microcontroller (MCU) group, featuring the Arm Cortex-M23 processor and optimized for motor control systems. RA2T1 devices are designed for single-motor applications such as fans, power tools, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, printers and hair dryers.

Feature Set Optimized for Motor Control

The RA2T1 devices add features to support motor control in single-motor systems. They include a three-channel sample-and-hold function that measures all three phase currents of Brushless DC (BLDC) motors simultaneously, improving control accuracy over sequential measurements. The RA2T1 MCUs also provide a complementary pulse width modulation feature in the timer, which enables automatic dead-time insertion and supports asymmetric PWM generation. These functions are designed for inverter drive applications and help simplify control algorithm implementation.

The RA2T1 devices offer safety features that are critical in motor control applications. They provide a Port Output Enable function and a high-speed comparator that work together to shut off the PWM output when an overcurrent is detected. The shutdown state can be selected according to the inverter specifications.

Renesas Leadership in Embedded Processing for Motor Control

Renesas has shipped motor-control specific MCUs for over 20 years. The company ships over 230 million motor control embedded processors per year to worldwide customers. In addition to multiple RA MCU groups, Renesas offers motor-control devices in its 32-bit RX family, its 16-bit RL78 MCUs and its 64-bit RZ MPUs.

“Customers have trusted Renesas motor control solutions for many years across thousands of systems,” said Daryl Khoo, vice president of embedded processing marketing division at Renesas. “The RA2T1 MCUs enhance our leadership in this area with market-leading technology, low-power operation, and legendary Renesas quality and safety standards for single-motor systems.”

Renesas’ Flexible Software Package (FSP) supports the RA2T1 Group MCUs. FSP provides infrastructure software including RTOS options, BSP, drivers, middleware, connectivity, networking, and security stacks, along with reference software for building AI, motor control, and cloud applications. Developers can integrate their code and preferred RTOS with FSP, allowing flexibility in application development. FSP also simplifies migrating motor control designs to other devices in the RA Series.

Winning Combinations

Renesas has combined the RA2T1 Group MCUs with compatible devices from its portfolio to offer an array of Winning Combinations, including Portable Power ToolsSmart BLDC Ceiling FanCordless Vacuum CleanerCordless Leaf Blower. Winning Combinations are verified system architectures built from compatible Renesas products, designed to reduce design complexity and development risk. Renesas offers 400 Winning Combinations to help customers streamline product development and accelerate time to market.
