Roman Telescope Will Add a Wider View to NASA’s Cosmic Observations

The observatory will complement Hubble, Webb, Euclid, and Rubin while testing technology for the future Habitable Worlds Observatory.

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will join an expanding network of observatories designed to study the universe from different perspectives. Rather than replacing existing telescopes, Roman will complement their capabilities with a combination of wide-field imaging, infrared observations, and high resolution, according to The News York Times (full article available to subscribers).

Roman will have roughly the same infrared resolution as the Hubble Space Telescope, but it will observe much larger areas of the sky more quickly. Over five years, Roman is expected to collect an amount of data that would take Hubble centuries to acquire. This broad view will allow astronomers to study large populations of cosmic objects efficiently.

The James Webb Space Telescope provides a different advantage. While Roman emphasizes breadth, Webb specializes in depth and detail. Webb can observe light from the early universe and examine individual objects with greater sharpness. Both telescopes operate in infrared wavelengths, making their observations complementary.

Roman also shares similarities with the European Space Agency’s Euclid telescope. Euclid is surveying about one-third of the sky, while Roman will image roughly 12%. Roman, however, will provide observations with greater precision and depth.

On the ground, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory will repeatedly photograph the entire southern sky in visible wavelengths. Roman’s space-based images will cover a narrower field but offer sharper views, enabling astronomers to investigate objects that appear less distinct in Rubin’s observations.

Roman will also contribute to NASA’s longer-term search for potentially habitable worlds. One of its instruments will test technologies intended for the Habitable Worlds Observatory, a future space telescope planned for the 2040s. That observatory is being designed with the ambitious goal of studying Earth-like exoplanets and searching for evidence that some could harbor life.
