Samsung’s Micro-RGB TV Raises the Bar for Backlight Precision

Tiny RGB LEDs unlock 100% BT.2020 color, deeper contrast, and AI-tuned visuals without going full micro-LED.

Samsung’s new Micro-RGB TV reimagines LCD backlighting by swapping traditional white or blue LEDs for micro-scale red, green, and blue LEDs, each under 100 µm. This RGB layer sits behind the LCD panel, giving much finer control over light and color. It’s not an emissive micro-LED display, but it delivers leaps in color fidelity and contrast that rival high-end alternatives, reports ArsTechnica.

Precision is the headline. Samsung reports full 100% coverage of the BT.2020 color gamut, a first for a consumer TV, and it’s backed by a “Micro-RGB Precision Color” certification from VDE. The micro-RGB LEDs also allow for ultra-tight local dimming control, with Samsung hinting at roughly triple the dimming zones of top mini-LED TVs.

A custom “Micro-RGB AI Engine” enhances this tech. It analyzes each frame in real time to fine-tune color and brightness, boosting dull tones while maintaining natural consistency.

In real-world demos, the visuals stand out. Reviewers describe colors as vivid and accurate, and contrast that feels more controlled than even Samsung’s Neo QLED models. The TV maintains image quality and saturation, even at wide viewing angles, with no overblown color or “bloom” artifacts.

Despite the price tag, approximately $30,000 for the 115-inch model, the new backlight design offers a more attainable bridge toward micro-LED quality.

Samsung’s Micro-RGB TV shows that the path to stunning, precise visuals doesn’t require layer-by-layer emissive tech. It’s a compelling middle ground using ultra-fine RGB backlighting, AI tuning, and LCD fundamentals, poised to define the next wave of premium screens.
