
Self-driving cars promise to transform transportation by allowing vehicles to navigate roads with limited or no human intervention. Yet despite rapid advances in automation, Forbes reports that fully autonomous vehicles remain far from becoming an everyday option for private drivers.
Autonomous vehicles use cameras, radar, and lidar to detect traffic, pedestrians, lane markings, curbs, cyclists, and other obstacles. Onboard computers combine this information with software, algorithms, and machine learning to control steering, braking, and acceleration.
Vehicle automation is divided into six levels established by SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) International, ranging from Level 0, where humans remain responsible for driving, to Level 5, where a vehicle can operate entirely without human involvement. Technologies available to consumers, including GM Super Cruise, Ford BlueCruise, and Tesla Full Self-Driving, are classified as Level 2 systems and still require driver supervision.
Autonomous vehicles could provide several benefits. Driverless transportation may improve mobility for older adults, people with disabilities, and communities lacking convenient public transportation. Commercial operators could increase efficiency because autonomous vehicles can operate longer without driver breaks. Advanced driver-assistance technologies could also reduce accidents and traffic congestion. Research cited by Forbes suggests driving efficiencies from autonomous vehicles could reduce lifetime energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by up to 9%.
Significant obstacles remain. Heavy rain and snow can interfere with sensors and obscure road markings. Autonomous systems also struggle to replicate human judgment in unpredictable situations. Safety concerns have intensified following serious crashes involving autonomous test vehicles and robotaxis.
Companies including Waymo, Gatik, Kodiak Robotics, and Einride are already deploying autonomous technology in transportation and logistics.
For consumers, however, fully driverless ownership remains a longer-term prospect. Autonomous technology is likely to expand gradually, with commercial fleets and increasingly capable driver-assistance systems leading the transition.
