Siemens, Battery-NY Build Automation for Battery Pilot Plant

Siemens framework standardizes controls, production data, traceability and digital workflows across battery manufacturing equipment.

WASHINGTON, DC, Sep 10, 2026 – Siemens and Battery-NY are developing the automation and digital manufacturing architecture for battery development and pilot manufacturing facility in upstate New York. The facility targets a problem battery makers face when scaling up: integrating equipment from multiple machine builders.

Battery-NY has adopted Siemens automation across much of its production-equipment landscape and uses the Siemens Battery Automation Framework as its standardization reference. The framework applies a common operational approach to mixing, coating, calendaring, slitting, cell assembly, formation, and cycling, and supports production and quality visibility, dashboards, track-and-trace, and material genealogy. It also provides a path for simulation, digital twins, software-defined automation, and AI as the facility expands. Siemens Foundational Technologies will evaluate those capabilities against manufacturing challenges to assess their research and production value.

“We started working with Siemens early because we wanted to consider digitalization from the beginning, not add it after the equipment was installed,” said Paul Malliband, executive director of Battery-NY. “Our goal is a flexible, modular facility where new battery technologies and manufacturing approaches can be introduced over time while the controls, automation and software foundation evolve with them.”

The collaboration connects equipment-level control with manufacturing data, research translation, and workforce learning. Battery-NY is designed to bridge the gap between battery research and manufacturing. The facility will let cell designs and process concepts be evaluated on manufacturing-relevant equipment, with repeatable workflows and production data, so teams can see what scaling beyond the laboratory requires. Researchers get experience in an industrially relevant environment: academic users can work with manufacturing processes and data, suppliers can see how their systems behave in a production environment, and manufacturers can assess digital workflows before applying them.

Battery-NY is supported by the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Building Back Better Regional Challenge and Empire State Development.

Battery-NY is a battery prototyping, pilot manufacturing and commercialization facility operated through New Energy New York. Created in 2022, the program is based in Johnson City, NY. It supports battery developers moving technologies from research into manufacturing and commercial production.
