NUEVO LEÓN, Mexico, Mar 16, 2026 – The Siemens Mitras manufacturing plant in Santa Catarina, Nuevo León, has received LEED Platinum certification, the highest rating in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) system. The 18,700 square meter facility is the first Siemens factory worldwide to earn the rating. It is also the first industrial building in Mexico to earn LEED Platinum for Building Design and Construction: New Construction under LEED v4. The certification recognizes the plant’s sustainable building design and energy efficient industrial operations.

The Siemens plant, inaugurated in 2024 in northern Mexico, produces plastic injection molded parts and low voltage electrical components. These products support circuit protection and electrification technologies used in industrial infrastructure.

The LEED Platinum recognition is linked to efforts to align industrial production with sustainability goals. Alejandro Preinfalk, president and CEO of Siemens Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, and Marco Cosío, vice president of Smart Infrastructure for the region, said the project focuses on Mexico’s role as a manufacturing hub. The effort also relates to digitalization and operational practices.

“Just as we support our customers accelerate their digital and sustainability transformation, we are driving our own transformation at speed and scale. Our LEED Platinum certification for our Mitras manufacturing plant is a blueprint for the future of sustainable manufacturing”, said Judith Wiese, chief people and sustainability officer (CPSO) and member of the managing board of Siemens. “Mexico is central to bringing this future to life: a strategic hub with highly skilled people enabling Siemens to deliver innovation at scale for our customers while advancing our commitment to a more sustainable, resilient world”.

The Mitras factory integrates Siemens automation, digital monitoring platforms, and energy management systems to support digitalized manufacturing operations. These technologies track production activity, improve operational visibility, and increase energy efficiency.

The plant uses about 40% less power compared with reference industrial buildings and generates around 800 MWh of renewable energy each year through on-site solar production. Annual CO₂ emissions are reduced by around 2,740 tons. The building also incorporates energy-efficient systems, monitoring tools, and smart infrastructure technologies that coordinate digital operations with energy management.

LEED is a green building certification system used in more than 180 countries to evaluate projects on energy efficiency, water management, materials, and environmental performance. Platinum is the highest rating in the system.

Siemens Real Estate (SRE) led the development and construction of the project from the planning stage. The group uses the LEED rating system for building and site development.

SRE has delivered more than 70 LEED certified projects worldwide, covering about 1.2 million square meters. The projects form part of Siemens’ global real estate portfolio and apply environmental standards across its industrial facilities.

Mexico: A Hub in Siemens’ Global Strategy

Siemens has maintained an industrial presence in Mexico for more than 130 years. The Mitras facility supports manufacturing for North American markets and operates within Siemens’ global production network.

The project is part of Siemens’ manufacturing activity in the country. In November 2025, the company received the “Made in Mexico” certification from the Ministry of Economy. The designation recognizes technological value of products manufactured in Mexico.
