Forbes recommends looking for several inconsistencies rather than relying on a single sign. Faces may display unnatural blinking or expressions, while skin, hair, and eyes can subtly change between frames. Body movements may appear unusually smooth. Hands remain another potential giveaway, with extra fingers, impossible movements, or hands passing through objects. Background furniture, patterns, and other objects may also shift or distort as a scene progresses.
Audio provides additional clues. Lip movements may not align perfectly with speech, while synthetic voices can lack natural breathing, pauses, and changes in pacing. Background sounds that do not match the visible environment can also raise suspicion. Text appearing on signs, clothing, screens, or other objects may become distorted or change between frames. Inconsistent shadows, lighting, and reflections provide further warning signs.
However, visual inspection alone is becoming less reliable. Viewers can check whether platforms have labeled content as AI-generated or altered, although the absence of a label does not prove authenticity. Reverse image searches using keyframes can reveal whether footage has appeared elsewhere or has been taken out of context. Examining the posting account’s history can also help establish credibility.
AI detection tools offer another layer of verification, but their accuracy varies, particularly with compressed or low-resolution footage. Forbes therefore recommends treating detector results as supporting evidence rather than definitive proof.
Longer term, technologies such as C2PA Content Credentials and Google SynthID could shift verification toward establishing media provenance at creation. As synthetic video improves, verifying sources and context will become more dependable than simply searching for visible AI mistakes.
