The FIFA World Cup has become a global showcase not only for elite football talent but also for emerging technologies that are changing the way the sport is played, officiated, and experienced. Many of these innovations originate in universities and research institutions, where engineers and sports scientists develop new tools that eventually find their way onto the world’s biggest sporting stage, tells The Conversation.

Researchers are also exploring methods for tracking players and identifying key events using standard broadcast footage, potentially making advanced analytics more accessible beyond elite competitions.

Equipment design continues to evolve as well. The Adidas Trionda match ball incorporates a built-in sensor that records movement data 500 times per second and transmits information to officials in real time. Meanwhile, ongoing research into turf performance and injury prevention is influencing pitch standards, while advances in materials science are driving the development of 3D-printed football boots designed to improve comfort and fit.

Together, these innovations demonstrate how engineering, data science, and artificial intelligence are becoming integral to football’s future, enhancing performance, decision-making, player safety, and fan engagement.
