Cleve Moler, the mathematician whose work helped make advanced computing accessible to generations of scientists and engineers, died on May 20 at the age of 86. Best known as the creator of MATLAB, Moler played a pivotal role in transforming computers from specialized machines requiring extensive programming expertise into practical tools for solving complex real-world problems, tells The New York Times (full article available to subscribers).

During the 1970s, many scientific and engineering challenges had grown too complex for traditional analytical methods, yet using computers remained difficult and time-consuming. Researchers often relied on FORTRAN programming, punch cards, and lengthy processing cycles. Moler helped address these limitations by contributing to the development of EISPACK and LINPACK, influential software libraries that standardized numerical computing methods and provided researchers with reusable code for solving mathematical problems.

Recognizing that programming barriers still prevented many students and researchers from fully utilizing computers, Moler began developing MATLAB in the late 1970s. Originally intended as an educational tool, MATLAB provided a user-friendly interface that allowed users to perform sophisticated mathematical calculations without writing extensive code. The software effectively transformed complex numerical analysis into a more accessible process, enabling users to focus on solving problems rather than managing programming details.

The arrival of personal computers accelerated MATLAB’s adoption. Engineers, scientists, and researchers could now harness powerful computational capabilities through an intuitive platform. In 1984, Moler partnered with electrical engineer Jack Little to establish MathWorks, the company that continues to develop MATLAB and related technologies. Today, MATLAB is used by millions of professionals worldwide in fields ranging from engineering and finance to aerospace, robotics, and biomedical research.

Although Moler was not primarily known for inventing groundbreaking numerical algorithms, his greatest achievement was making sophisticated mathematical methods practical and widely available. Historians of computing credit him with helping bridge the gap between theoretical mathematics and everyday engineering practice.

His influence extends far beyond academia and industry. By democratizing access to advanced computation, Moler enabled countless innovations that rely on numerical modeling, simulation, and data analysis. His legacy lives on in the software that remains a cornerstone of modern scientific and engineering workflows.
