STOCKHOLM, Sweden and GENEVA, Switzerland, Oct 3, 2025 – Tobii and STMicroelectronics have begun mass production of an interior sensing system for a European carmaker. The system combines a wide field-of-view camera with driver and occupant monitoring, designed to work in both daylight and nighttime conditions. The technology enhances user experience while strengthening vehicle safety features.

“We’re very proud to bring this groundbreaking system to life. This is more than just technology; it’s a vision,” said Adrian Capata, senior vice president of Tobii Autosense. “Image quality is critical, and thanks to our strong collaboration with ST, we’ve achieved a unique balance that allows a single-camera solution to meet rigorous safety standards, while also unlocking enhanced user experiences. By combining visible and IR sensing, we’re enabling intelligent in-cabin environments that truly understand human presence, behavior, and context.”

“As a result of close collaboration on development and integration with Tobii, we have created a new generation of interior sensing technology that is reliable, user-friendly, and ready for widespread adoption across the automotive industry,” said Alexandre Balmefrezol, executive vice president and general manager of the imaging sub-group at STMicroelectronics. “We are now rapidly expanding our production capacity to meet the anticipated demand and ensure a seamless transition to mass manufacturing.”

Technical Information on the Interior Sensing System

Tobii and ST allow automotive OEMs to use a single in-cabin camera, offering an efficient and cost-effective solution.

The system integrates Tobii’s computing technology with STMicroelectronics’ VD1940 image sensor, designed for automotive use. The 5.1MP hybrid pixel sensor captures both RGB (color in daytime) and infrared (IR at nighttime) light. Its wide-angle field of view covers the entire cabin. Tobii’s algorithms process dual video streams, supporting both the driver monitoring system (DMS) and the occupancy monitoring system (OMS).

Tobii, through its automotive division Tobii Autosense, has secured design wins in more than 160 vehicle models. Both driver monitoring (DMS) and occupancy monitoring (OMS) systems are shipping in production vehicles.

The VD1940 image sensor is part of SafeSense, a sensing platform from STMicroelectronics designed for DMS and OMS. It includes functional safety and cybersecurity features for automotive safety applications. ST offers a portfolio of imaging solutions built for quality and cost efficiency in the automotive sector. As an integrated device manufacturer (IDM), STMicroelectronics controls the supply chain, from design to manufacturing. Production takes place in European fabs, ensuring supply security. These image sensors are in mass production and ready for integration by Tier 1 suppliers and automotive OEMs.
