WESTMINSTER, CO, Apr 30, 2026 – Trimble has connected SketchUp with Anthropic’s Claude through a Model Context Protocol (MCP) service, giving users a way to generate editable 3D models from text, speech, images, sketches, floor plans, and dimensions.

The integration uses a SketchUp Connector MCP service that allows Claude to interact with SketchUp (.skp) files. The connector runs cloud SketchUp sessions where Claude builds geometry and checks dimensions during modeling.

Conversational 3D Modeling

Users can describe building massing models, landscapes, furniture, and other design objects. Claude processes the prompts and reference inputs to generate geometry in SketchUp.

Users can revise models in the same chat by describing changes or pasting SketchUp screenshots. The screenshots can identify angles, proportions, or model elements that need adjustment.

“The learning curve and time it takes for professionals to transfer a vision to a digital model has traditionally been the biggest barrier to 3D modeling,” said Chris Cronin, vice president and general manager of architecture and design solutions at Trimble. “Natural language prompts and the power of AI make it easy for anyone to get started and excel, including inexperienced and non-traditional 3D design users, bringing us closer to our ‘3D for everyone’ goal.”

Model Revision and Output

The SketchUp Claude Connector tracks version history within a single chat. Users can move through earlier 3D models, review design changes, and refine geometry during the session.

When a model is complete, the Connector creates a 2D preview thumbnail and provides a download link to the .skp file. Users can open and edit the file in any SketchUp modeler.

Users can configure Claude on core skills and specific workflows to process repetitive modeling tasks.

Availability

Users can get started by enabling Trimble SketchUp in Claude’s MCP directory connector settings. Accessing the connector requires a Claude account and a Trimble ID.

Users receive a free SketchUp entitlement to save up to 30 SketchUp models. After that, a paid entitlement is required. The workflow ends with an editable .skp file that users can open in SketchUp for Web, Desktop, iPad, or iPhone.
