ABU DHABI, UAE, May 18, 2026 – Umovity and Tatweer have deployed the Middle East’s first adaptive ramp metering system on Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street in Abu Dhabi, using live traffic data, roadside sensors and signal control software to regulate highway entry and reduce delay-related costs by up to $2.6 million annually.
Umovity is the joint brand uniting Econolite and PTV Group. The project combines Econolite software for real-time local control with ST Engineering traffic management software for ramp metering coordination and monitoring. Tatweer led local engineering design, system integration, field deployment, commissioning and stakeholder coordination with Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre. The partners completed the system in six months.
The deployment is designed for interoperability with Abu Dhabi’s Intelligent Transport Central Platform (ITCP). PTV Group software is used in the local transport technology environment for real-time traffic modeling, simulation and network prediction.
Adaptive Entry Control
At critical highway access points, the ramp metering system controls how vehicles enter the roadway. It uses video, radar and in-road sensors to monitor speed, traffic density and queue lengths. The system adjusts signal timings automatically based on live road conditions, regulating vehicle entry before bottlenecks form.
Traffic and Emissions Effects
On Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street, the system is expected to reduce stop-and-go traffic during peak periods by controlling vehicle entry onto the highway. Steadier traffic flow can reduce fuel consumption and vehicle emissions by limiting repeated acceleration and braking.
Software and Deployment Roles
Umovity contributed its ramp metering technology, Econolite field controllers and EOS software for real-time local control. ST Engineering, working with Tatweer and Umovity, supplied traffic management functions through its TransCore (TransSuite) software.
Network Integration
The Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) is using ITCP to combine AI, monitoring, prediction and incident management for coordinated traffic operations across the road network. The ramp metering system provides a local deployment model for future traffic control projects in Abu Dhabi.
Nicholas Ghia, CEO, Umovity Software said: “This project demonstrates the real strength of Umovity – combining Econolite’s field-proven traffic control technologies with a broader ecosystem of advanced traffic management and analytics capabilities. By delivering a solution that integrates seamlessly into Abu Dhabi’s existing mobility platform, we are enabling measurable impact – reducing congestion, improving travel reliability, and creating long-term value for the city. This is exactly the kind of collaborative, future-ready approach needed to scale intelligent transport systems.”
Dr. Atef Garib, CEO, Tatweer added: “This deployment marks a significant milestone in Abu Dhabi’s journey toward intelligent, data-driven mobility. By combining world-class technology with deep regional execution expertise, we have delivered a solution that not only tackles today’s congestion challenges on one of our busiest corridors but also lays the foundation for the emirate’s long-term smart mobility ambitions. Our partnership with Umovity, and close alignment with local stakeholders, demonstrates what is possible when global innovation meets strong local delivery capability.”
