X-FAB Expands Erfurt Site for MEMS and Photonics

The Fab4Micro project receives €127.4 million in public funding to support production for automotive, industrial and medical markets.

ERFURT, Germany, Oct 7, 2026 – X-FAB held a ceremony to mark the start of construction on a cleanroom at its Erfurt site, which will expand manufacturing capacity for microsystems and photonics. The Fab4Micro project is receiving €127.4 million in funding from Germany’s federal government and the state of Thuringia under the EU Chips Act.

X-FAB is developing the facility to support demand from automotive, industrial and medical markets. The project continues the Erfurt site’s transition into X-FAB’s microsystems hub and will support industrial-scale production of microsystems and photonics products.

The Fab4Micro project is funded by:

  • German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, on the basis of a decision by the German Bundestag
  • The Thuringian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Rural Areas
