2026 Ig Nobels Celebrate Science’s Strangest Ideas

The 2026 Ig Nobel Prizes celebrated scientific research that sounds absurd at first but often addresses legitimate questions. Held in Zurich, Switzerland, the annual event recognized 10 projects spanning biomechanics, chemistry, medicine, biology, physics, technology, olfaction, economics, soil science, and social behavior, tells Wired.com.

Among the winners, researchers studying the Pacific beetle cockroach, Diploptera punctata, examined nutrient-rich crystals produced to nourish developing embryos. These crystals contain concentrated proteins, fats, and sugars, making cockroach milk remarkably energy dense.

The technology prize went to researchers who turned an unlikely biological structure into a manufacturing tool. They demonstrated that the extremely fine proboscis of a dead mosquito could serve as a high-resolution 3D-printing nozzle. The work illustrates biomimicry in an unusual form, using a structure already refined by evolution rather than engineering an equivalent from scratch.

Other winners tackled equally unconventional problems. Researchers investigated the safest way to blow the nose, while another team studied when venomous Bothrops jararaca snakes are most likely to bite after pressure is applied to different parts of their bodies. Physics researchers used mathematical models to determine impact angles that reduce splashing in urinals and developed prototypes based on their findings.

Scientists also developed a scientific definition of kissing that could apply across animal species. Another study examined why parents generally find the smell of younger children more pleasant than that of teenagers. Research into friendship suggested that people may prefer friends who treat them kindly but behave harshly toward their enemies.

Perhaps the simplest experiment involved burying about 1,000 pairs of cotton underwear. Researchers used their decomposition to indicate microbial activity and soil health. Together, the awards demonstrate the Ig Nobels’ central idea: unusual questions and playful experiments can still reveal meaningful insights about engineering, biology, human behavior, and the natural world.
