The first practical communication satellites, including Telstar, demonstrated that signals could be relayed across continents through space, reshaping global television and telecommunications. Sound and signal processing feature prominently as well. Bell Labs researchers developed early digital signal processing techniques and technologies that improved voice transmission quality and efficiency. These innovations later influenced audio coding, mobile communications, and multimedia systems.
The list also includes Bell Labs’ role in cellular network foundations, from early concepts of dividing coverage areas into cells to enable large-scale mobile communication. This work enabled the explosion of mobile phones decades later.
