Engineering Beyond Repetition: Generative AI Reshapes Design Roles

Generative artificial intelligence is changing product design workflows by taking over many of the repetitive tasks engineers have traditionally handled. According to Seth DeLand, product marketing manager at MathWorks, engineers are starting to spend less time on low-level implementation work and more time on defining problems, setting objectives, and guiding creative exploration in design. This shift reflects a fundamental change in how products are conceived and developed, says Design News.

In the past, engineers often wrote boilerplate code, generated first-draft analyses, and performed manual testing. Those activities are increasingly within the reach of large language models and other AI tools. DeLand says these tools not only write software but can also handle elements of requirements analysis and testing that once demanded significant human effort. With AI producing initial designs and validating iterations, engineers can focus on higher-level thinking, such as framing the design space and articulating performance goals.

That is not to suggest deep technical knowledge becomes irrelevant. Engineers still need the expertise to evaluate, verify, and refine what AI produces. But the article makes clear that engineers’ highest value lies in their judgment and ability to frame questions rather than execute repetitive steps. The shift calls for platforms that integrate automation with capabilities for exploring creative alternatives within defined boundaries.

In practice, this means designers and engineers are moving toward roles that resemble creative direction and system thinking. Engineers define constraints, manage iteration cycles, and ask the questions that guide AI toward useful solutions. AI’s ability to iterate rapidly without physical prototypes accelerates design cycles, compresses time to insight, and expands the range of alternatives designers can consider. The transformation of design work extends collaboration patterns as well, allowing teams to use AI to explore control strategies, test scenarios, and performance trade-offs early in the design process.

Ultimately, generative AI is not eliminating engineering roles but rebalancing them. Engineers who adapt by strengthening problem definition, creative judgment, and high-level system thinking will define the next era of product innovation.
