OpenAI’s latest language model, GPT-5, is now publicly accessible through ChatGPT (both free and paid tiers) and is hailed by OpenAI as a “significant step along the path of AGI.” The model integrates enhanced capabilities in reasoning, natural-feeling (“vibe”) coding, and agentic behaviors—all wrapped in upgraded safety features.

Key Technical Highlights:

  • PhD-level performance: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman describes interacting with GPT-5 as akin to consulting an always-available expert across disciplines.
  • Seamless reasoning: GPT-5 autonomously triggers deeper reasoning when needed—users don’t need to activate it—unifying earlier fragmented reasoning models like GPT-4, o1/o3, etc.
  • “Vibe coding” and agentic tasks: GPT-5 powers a more intuitive coding experience—OpenAI demonstrated it by building a fully functional “French Playground” web app complete with flashcards, quizzes, and an interactive game via natural-language prompts within seconds. It’s also more robust at planning multi-step, tool-using tasks, recovering from errors better than predecessors.
