SAN DIEGO, CA and TOULON, France, May 29, 2025 – Kontron has introduced the VX3406, a 3U VPX Ethernet board designed for use in harsh environments. It is the first in its class to support up to six 1000BASE-T ports, each managed by an Ethernet controller. This architecture is intended to prevent bandwidth contention, improve fault and cybersecurity isolation, and support traffic prioritization.
Designed for C4ISR systems, unmanned platforms and any connected warfare scenario, the ruggedized, low power consumption VX3406 enables secure, reliable, real-time data in rugged settings.
The VX3406 integrates an 8-port, 8-lane PCIe Gen3 switch offering users the ability to leverage up to four independent 1G/2.5G ports supporting TSN/IEEE1388 along with up to two dedicated 1G copper ports, enabling six concurrent 1000BASE-T ports for network expansion.

The VX3406 supports integration of TSN-capable controllers across multiple independent ports, removing the need for legacy deterministic protocols or external switches. This supports data transmission in embedded aerospace and defense systems. It is suited for applications that require low-latency, jitter-free Ethernet communication, such as sensor fusion, mission system coordination, real-time control loops, and synchronized audio/video transmission.
“As the first and only 3U VPX Ethernet card on the market offering six totally independent ports, the Kontron VX3406 raises the bar for communications performance, connectivity and flexibility in harsh defense and aerospace environments, with the added advantage of being designed and supported from France and therefore free of ITAR restrictions,” said Christophe Ferrande, Kontron Product Manager.
