
Researchers from the Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT) in Bulgaria developed SPEAR-1, a robot “brain” designed to operate industrial robots with enhanced dexterity and understanding of physical space, tells Wired.com. Unlike earlier robot foundation models that rely primarily on two-dimensional image data, SPEAR-1 integrates explicit 3D data during training, so the robot can reason about how objects occupy volume, move through space, and interact physically.
In benchmark tests (such as the “RoboArena” challenge), SPEAR-1 performed comparably to commercial models such as Pi-0.5 from a well-funded startup, across tasks such as grasping, manipulating household items, and opening drawers. The open-weight nature of SPEAR-1 means startups and academic labs can access and build upon the model, just as open-source large language models unlocked rapid innovation in generative AI.
Despite its promise, the article notes notable limitations. SPEAR-1 still requires retraining or fine-tuning for different robotic arms or environments, meaning general-purpose robot intelligence remains a work in progress. Additionally, while 3D training data represents a significant advancement, some experts caution that its full value in real-world robotics has yet to be proven.
For engineers and robotics professionals, SPEAR-1 signals a shift: the focus is moving from 2D image-based perception toward volume, space, and physical interaction. If scaled and generalized, the model could accelerate the development of robots that adapt to novel tasks and environments. However, the path ahead still includes scaling training data, reducing hardware dependence, and enhancing transfer across various robot platforms.
SPEAR-1 may mark the opening chapter of a new era in embodied AI, one where robots don’t just see the world, but understand it in three dimensions.
