WALDKIRCH, Germany, July 10, 2025 – SICK has launched the OD200, a compact laser distance sensor engineered for short-range measurements on reflective, dark, and irregular surfaces. Designed for industrial environments, it improves stability and accuracy when inspecting shiny metal, plastic components, and parts in poor lighting. With a new measurement core, dynamic receiver, and optimized optics, the OD200 delivers consistent results to minimize errors and reduce rework.

The OD200 expands SICK’s displacement sensor portfolio and builds on the application range of the OD Mini. It is designed for straightforward installation and commissioning with plug-and-play functionality. Supporting standard connectivity options, the sensor delivers high process speeds with precise measurement performance. With IO-Link capability, it also provides additional data for inline performance optimization and condition monitoring during operation.

The OD200 is designed for production and quality control tasks across industries such as automotive, aerospace, consumer goods, electronics, robotics, and mechanical and plant engineering. It supports inline quality control for reflective materials, small parts counting, and height detection in assemblies.

OD200: The ideal solution for measurements on all materials and environmental conditions

The OD200 delivers stable and accurate measurements on complex surfaces. In production, assembly, and quality processes, materials such as carbon fiber composites, die castings, or textured metals can cause measurement errors, especially in poor lighting or with small components. The OD200 is designed to maintain measurement accuracy in these situations.

The OD200 uses a triangulation measurement core and evaluation algorithms to improve measurement accuracy. It supports applications with process speeds up to 3 kHz. Different sensor options cover measuring ranges from 25 mm to 160 mm, with repeatability as low as 2 µm. The receiver helps detect surfaces with low remission. The optical system is adjusted for the shape and quality of the light spot and is built to resist ambient light interference. Together, these elements enable precise measurements on high-gloss, reflective, or low-remission surfaces, as well as on structured or uneven materials, even where lighting conditions vary. By minimizing interference and reducing the chance of missing signals, the OD200 lowers downtime and the need for maintenance. This helps maintain operation and process efficacy.

Integration, commissioning, connectivity: all plug and play

The OD200 is designed for integration and setup, even when space is limited. It follows industry standards and supports a variety of accessories. The sensor includes preset configurations and algorithms to make initial setup more efficient. Its menu-driven user interface on the display helps guide users through setup and operation. For connectivity, the OD200 supports integration with automation systems and Industry 4.0 setups. It is equipped with standard interfaces, IO-Link, analog current and voltage outputs, and switching input and output. IO-Link connectivity also allows sensor access in areas that are difficult to reach after installation.

Inline optimization and condition monitoring

The OD200 supports measurement and provides operational data to monitor sensor status and process conditions. Using SICK’s SOPAS software, it can be configured to meet application requirements and maintain stable performance during operation.

Nick Hartley, SICK market product manager for instrumentation & distance measurement, says, “The compact OD200 displacement sensor enables reliable measurements, even on materials that other sensors fail to measure. It is robust, fast and easy to install, with its compact housing providing better integration. Delivering precise, stable measurement from 25 mm to 160 mm down to the micron level across three variants, the OD200 is suited to numerous applications across a wide range of industry sectors, providing enhanced productivity and peace of mind even in challenging ambient light conditions and with dark, shiny or uneven materials.”
