
The transistor is one of the defining inventions of modern technology. Computers, smartphones, artificial intelligence, video games, navigation systems, and even modern cars depend on it. Wired.com traces its development through earlier switching technologies to explain why this tiny component became so important.
The story begins with electric relays, introduced in the 19th century for telegraph systems. A relay uses one electrical current to control another. This allowed telegraph signals to travel farther by using intermediate circuits to regenerate weakened signals. Relays remain useful, but their mechanical operation limits their switching speed.
Vacuum tubes provided the next major advance. By controlling the movement of electrons inside an evacuated glass tube, engineers could regulate electrical current without mechanical contacts. Vacuum tubes switched faster than relays and could amplify weak signals, making radio amplification and early electronic computers possible. However, they consumed considerable power, generated heat, failed frequently, and occupied substantial space. Early computers such as ENIAC therefore required rooms filled with equipment and extensive maintenance.
The transistor, invented at Bell Labs in 1947, addressed these limitations using semiconductors. Materials such as silicon can behave as conductors or insulators depending on their configuration. Adding or removing electrons creates n-type and p-type semiconductor regions. Combining these regions allows engineers to build a transistor in which a small electrical signal controls a larger current. In essence, the transistor performs the switching function of earlier technologies with much greater efficiency and control.
Its greatest advantage is miniaturization. Early transistor radios contained only 6–10 transistors. Today, advanced smartphones can contain tens of billions. By shrinking electronic switches and packing enormous numbers onto integrated circuits, engineers transformed room-sized computers into portable devices and created the foundation for modern digital technology.
