
As wind energy expands, protecting birds and bats from collisions with turbines remains a significant environmental challenge. A major review led by researchers at Murdoch University concludes that no single technology can adequately address the problem. Instead, wind farms need combinations of mitigation measures tailored to local wildlife, landscapes, and operating conditions, tells Tech Xplore.
Researchers from Murdoch University’s Harry Butler Institute and its environmental, conservation, energy, and engineering programs examined 52 strategies and tools designed to reduce bird and bat collisions. Fewer than half had been independently tested, revealing significant gaps in the evidence needed to determine their effectiveness.
Available technologies include radar systems, cameras, acoustic sensors, deterrents, and turbine curtailment, in which turbine operations are reduced or stopped under conditions that create higher collision risks. Each approach offers advantages but also has limitations, making it difficult to identify one method suitable for every wind farm.
The researchers argue that combining these technologies offers a more promising path. Site-specific strategies could account for differences in species behavior, migration patterns, terrain, climate, and turbine operations. Australia, in particular, needs additional data to determine which combinations are most effective for its landscapes and wildlife.
The findings could help governments and wind energy developers create more effective Bird & Bat Management Plans. They could also strengthen environmental assessments, regulatory approvals, operational requirements, and decisions about future wind projects.
The study also demonstrates the importance of collaboration among engineers, ecologists, researchers, industry, and policymakers. Better independent testing would allow developers and regulators to base wildlife protection measures on stronger scientific evidence rather than assumptions about individual technologies.
As wind power becomes an increasingly important source of renewable electricity, the research suggests that biodiversity protection must develop alongside turbine technology. Smarter monitoring, stronger evidence, and locally adapted combinations of mitigation measures could help wind farms generate renewable energy while reducing their impact on birds and bats.
